The Mythological Ruler of the Underworld

The mythological ruler of the deep dark underworld and the first kidnapper, Pluto shows us how to transform ourselves and others through obsessive, compulsive focus, and the intensity to take things to their very core and back up again. It is Pluto that brings up new situations, energies and powers that we ultimately must learn to master and use constructively.

A strong Pluto in a chart generally indicates an outstanding individual; one who breaks precedents, a non-conformist (like Pluto's orbit) who brings forward new developments and concepts into their field of endeavor. Pluto's nature is intense, secretive and controlling and it is capable of ruthless manipulation to meet itsothers into action they were previously unable to consider. Pluto is ruthless in the pursuit of gain exhaustively, in the illusion that this will bring absolute control over Pluto is likewise inclined to take control over others, and can be extremely possessive and revengeful, which conflicts with Uranian principles of individual freedom, and often attracts compulsive type relationships that are intense and dramatic.

By transit or in other predictive charts, Pluto's extremely slow movement (taking about 20 years to move through a sign) insures deep and lasting alteration, and its way of promoting change is often drastic and unyielding. There is no point in avoiding the situations presented to us under a Pluto transit, as any resistance only serves to intensify the transforming energies. Look rather to what is being asked to die away and be reborn, and release that willingly, in order to move into Pluto's higher octaves. Pluto rules the water sign of Scorpio, but also seems to bring the influence of the higher octave of Mars. Pluto rules the masses and the atrocities of war that have brought transformation of maps and monarchs. However, its realm has the ultimate goal of universal welfare, and so it will transmute an ego that seeks dominion through the use of individual Will alone.
